Some Favourite Prayers

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom the power and the glory for ever and ever.
AMEN

St Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord, to make our common supplications unto thee, and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name, thou will grant their requests.  Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be most expedient for them,  granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth and, in the world to come, life everlasting.
AMEN

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

God the Father

Merciful God, we dare not come to your table trusting in our own goodness and virtue.  We come because Christ has invited us; we come because we are sinful and need forgiveness; we come because we are hungry for life and need to be fed; we come in gratitude and wonder to offer ourselves to you in worship and adoration.

Father, forgive us, feed us and accept our praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord AMEN

God the Son

Lord the feast is yours not ours and it is your table to which we come to be your guests; your presence which we seek; your body and blood of which we partake.  Help us to draw near with expectant hearts and a living faith to receive, as from your hands, the bread of life and the cup of salvation; and so find refreshment. strength and peace, for your love’s sake. AMEN

God the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, Lord God, Giver of life, come to us as a refreshing and strengthening power.  Purge out of our lives all that denies your inspiration.   Keep us alert to your challenges.   Let us be open to your new demands, both in the world and in the church.  Give us humility that we may see your vision and, trusting in your power, commit ourselves to it, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.   AMEN

From Compline

Into thy hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all whom we love; beseeching thee to keep us under the shadow of thy wings.   Drive from us every evil thing; give thine angels charge over us; guard us ever in life or death  that, whether we wake or sleep, we may live together with thee through Jesus Christ our Lord AMEN

For the Evening of our Days

O Lord support us all the day long of this troublous life, until the shades lengthen and the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over and our work is done.   Then, Lord, in your mercy grant us safe lodging, a holy rest and peace at the last, through Jesus Christ our Lord.   AMEN

When a loved one has died

We give back to you, O Lord, those whom you gave to us.   You did not lose them when you gave them to us and we do not lose them by their return to you.   Your son taught us that life is eternal and love cannot die, so death is only an horizon and an horizon is only the limit of our sight.

Open our eyes to see more clearly and draw us closer to you,  so that we may be closer to our loved ones who are with you. You have told us that you are preparing a place for us, prepare us also for that happy place that where you are, we may be also.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord AMEN

Thanksgiving after Communion

Father of all, we give you thanks and praise that, when we were still far off, you met us in your Son and brought us home.   Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory.   May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.   Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us so we and all your children shall be free and the whole earth live to praise you name, through Christ our Lord AMEN

3rd Collect from Evensong

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee O Lord, and, by thy great mercy, defend us from all perils and dangers of this night, for the love of thy only son our Saviour, Jesus Christ.   AMEN

From Compline

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, may repose upon thy eternal changelessness through Jesus Christ our Lord AMEN

St Francis

Lord, make us instruments of your peace; where there is hatred, let us sow love;   where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;  where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour AMEN

Attributed to St Francis

Divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.   For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. AMEN

St Paul’s Grace to the Corinthians

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and always. AMEN

In times of difficulty

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.  In happy moments, praise God; in difficult moments, seek God; in quiet moments, worship God; in painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God.

St. Ignatius Loyola

Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee as Thou deservest; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN

Nunc Dimmitis

Now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word.  For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people.   To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.   Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. AMEN.

St. Anselm

Lord my God, teach my heart this day where and how to see you; where and how to find you.  You have made and remade me and you have given to me all the truly good things I possess and still I do not know you; I have not yet done that for which I was created.  Teach me to seek you, for I cannot seek you unless you teach me, or find you unless you show yourself to me.   Let me seek you in my longing; let me long for you in my seeking; let me find you by loving you; let me love you when I find you. For Jesus Christ’s sake.   AMEN

For the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,

And lighten with celestial fire;

Thou the anointing Spirit art,

Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart:

Thy blessed unction from above

Is comfort, life, and fire of love;

Enable with perpetual light

The dullness of our blinded sight:

Anoint and cheer our soiled face

With the abundance of thy grace:

Keep far our foes, give peace at home;

Where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,

And thee, of Both, to be but One;

That through the ages all along

This may be our endless song:

Praise to thine eternal merit,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  AMEN

At the death of a loved one

Go forth from this world in the love of God the Father who created you, in the mercy of Jesus Christ who redeemed you, and in the power of the Holy Spirit who strengthens you.    May the  heavenly host sustain you and the whole company of heaven enfold you so that, in communion with all the faithful departed, you may dwell in peace and rise in glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord.      AMEN
