Biography

I was born in a small town called Shildon in County Durham, to Christian parents – and was named after the town’s Church of St. John the Evangelist. At the age of eight, my mother said to me “You’ll be a Vicar one day!”. I didn’t believe her – and joined a bank at the age of 16. I moved to London, where I enjoyed serving at the local Church in Leyton, where I became a Reader and stayed for 35 years before moving to Colchester. I trained for the ministry, was ordained and have served in Myland since 2005 before being appointed here.

Whilst working in London, I met June, and we married in 1978. June has always been wonderful support to me in all I have done, and we couldn’t be happier here. We don’t have children, but we share the home of two lovely cats.

My first connection with north Essex was my Great Uncle, Revd John Best, who was Rector of Rowhedge and Fingringhoe from 1953 to 1965. My parents and I used to visit for many weeks during summer holidays, and I came to appreciate the joys of village life in beautiful surroundings! Some years later in 1989, I became a Team Member on the Mission to Colchester, where it became clear that I loved the people of the area too! However, knowing how God’s timing is perfect but very different from mine, it took another decade before I retired from the bank in 2000, started training and the Lord made it clear we should move to Colchester.

When I’m not taking services or meeting people in the Parishes, I’m usually in the car driving between them – or in Myland, where I continue to work part-time as Associate Priest. it’s just as well I enjoy driving! I also enjoy music, being a member of Dovercourt Choral Society – and sport in general; I’m a season ticket holder at Colchester United. June is a keen gardener, and allows me to do weeding under careful supervision!

In my ministry, I have always believed it vital that the Church plays a full part in the local community, so I am looking forward to many opportunities to meet people and enjoy this beautiful part of Constable Country.
